Rita was the oldest of three children born to Catherine Drake and Frederick Thompson. She graduated from Nanticoke High School in Nanticoke, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, in 1942. She was employed by United Penn Bank in Nanticoke as a teller until she retired in 1988. She never married.
