Michael Namey, 87, of Wilkes-Barre, passed away Saturday, at home surrounded by his loving family.
He was the son of the late Albert and Zanie Namey. Mike graduated from E.L. Meyers High School in 1947. Prior to graduation, Mike entered and served his country proudly in the U.S. Army. He served in the 134th Battalion, 83rd Regiment being honorably discharged.
Mike was employed by Biscontini Distribution Center, Kingston, until his retirement in 1972.
Together with his best friend and beloved brother Leo, Mike began what was to become the passion of his life, raising homing pigeons. Leo and Mike quickly became nationally and internationally renowned for their breeding of Mussolini homing pigeons. They captured several All-American Championships. Due to their tremendous success, they were acknowledged in the racing industry as "Masters of Breeding and Flying."
In 1998, Mike was selected to judge the international pigeon convention in Edmonton, Canada.
Mike married the love of his life, the former Joan Miller, and together they traveled worldwide on many international racing pigeon conventions.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 60 years, Joan, sisters Fannie Mamary, Bessie Jacobs, Mary Reh, Helen Koscak, Ruth Solomon and Irene Tenneriello; brothers, Leo, George, Joseph and John Namey.
He is survived by two sons; and a daughter; two grandchildren; a brother; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Interment will be in his parish cemetery, St. Mary's Antiochain Orthodox, Hanover Township.
