Marlene was the older of two daughters. She graduated from Dallas Senior High School in Dallas, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, in 1972, and later graduated from Empire Beauty School in Wilkes-Barre. She was a member of the Carverton United Methodist Church, where for over 13 years she was one of the church organists.
