Frances was born to Sam and Laura Sixkiller. She was proud of her Native American heritage and took her responsibilities as a voting member of the Cherokee nation, as she did all other aspects of life seriously. She graduated from Arvada High School and attended University of Northern Colorado where she received a bachelor of arts in physical education and master of arts in athletic administration. She spent many of her teaching career at Lyons Junior/Senior High School coaching volleyball, basketball and track. She led her volleyball teams to state 13 years in a row.
