Born Pierre Péteul in Bourg d'Iré, Maine-et-Loire, France, he was a Capuchin Franciscan friar who helped smuggle approximately 4,000 Jews into safety from Nazi-occupied Southern France. On 1 December 1966, he was honored with the Medal of the Righteous among the Nations for his courage and self-sacrifice.

Pere Marie-Benoit spent his last months at the Convent of Capuchins in Angers (not far from the village where he was born). I have been able to confirm that he died there and was buried in the small cemetery at the back of the convent’s garden.
