Vivian D. McLaughlin-McCarthy of Staten Island, NY passed on September 12, 2013 at the age of 69.

She was born to Charles McLaughlin and Evelyn King-Pascarella on January 16, 1944. Her parents preceded her in death.

For the first few years of her life, my Mom was raised by her grandmother, Hannah Hannula-King, an elderly Norwegian woman who had finished raising 17 children of her own. It was due to the love, compassion and grace of her grandmother, that my Mom was so very loving and had such incredible values. I never had the honor of meeting my great-grandmother Hannah, but Mom kept her legacy alive by always sharing stories of what an incredible loving soul she was, for which I am grateful for, it made mom who she was, and I got to benefit from that.

Most of her life she worked as private nanny, a job she was made for. Mom had such a gift and way with children. I know, I have the best memories of my childhood thanks to her.

She also loved and adored cats and always had very unique ones. I swear Mom had a way of communicating with them. I use to joke she was our very own Eliza Doolittle.

Mom is reunited in Heaven with her son, my big brother John J. McCarthy, Jr. John had passed in 2004 at the at of 39.

She is survived by her daughter, Kathyann and son-in-law, Warren Bodell. Her sister Rosehanna Lavelle, 8 nieces and nephews. Also, one grandson, John Thomas McCarthy

Upon my brother John's passing, that is when she developed congestive heart failure due to her heart being broken. She would tell me that life would never be fun again and that no mother should ever have to outlive her child. On a memorial cd I made, I dedicated the song by Paul Simon "Mother & Child Reunion" for them both.

She had a very close relationship with my husband Warren. It was not your ordinary Mother/Son-in-law role. She loved Warren as her own son as he loved & respected her like his Mom, for which was another Blessing in my life. It was Warren that took such good care of her in her final week while I was able to go to work.

My beautiful Mother, truly a very unique soul. I know from bottom of my heart I was sent to her for a reason and the time we had was truly the most amazing gift that God could have Blessed me with. I can't thank God enough for her and the life we shared.

She was my best friend and my reason for living. I am still in shock over her sudden passing, but the only thing holding me up right now, is the fact she went so peacefully in my arms. My mother was there to bring me into this world and I was there for her to let her go. I do believe Angels came and took her. Mommy, I love you , miss you and understand you are no longer trapped in a body that was working against you, but I would have given you my heart if needed.

""You can shed tears that she is gone, or you can smile because she has lived. You can close your eyes and pray she'll come back, or you can open your eyes and see all she's left. Your heart can be empty because you can't see her, or you can be full of the love you shared. You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday, or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday. You can remember her only that she is gone, or you can cherish her memory and let it live on. You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back. Or you can do what she'd want: smile, open your eyes, love, and go on." By David Harkins, English Poet

Mom, thank you for being a friend, I will always be on your side. I know you have to undo all the damage that has been done and it's certainly is your turn. Reach and touch the stars and remember how much I always loved the moon Mommy, so when I look up at it, spread your wings and glow in its glory for me. Remember I love you more than you will ever know, my special girl ~ Missing you today and all of my tomorrow's until our souls are reunited, Love your daughter, Kathyann
