Army Pvt. Adams was assigned to the 122nd Engineer Battalion, Army National Guard, Edgefield, South Carolina. Adams died of non-combat related injuries at Forward Operating Base St. Mere, Iraq. He was the victim of a gunshot wound (under investigation). Algernon was a 1985 graduate of Butler High School and had served in the Guard for about 17 years. He earned a Purple Heart in August when he was one of four engineers hit by shrapnel in Iraq. His mother describes him as a good son who went and did his duty and was there for his country. Algernon is survived by his wife Lisa, three sons and four daughters.
