Othello was born with gastroschisis. His intestines had formed outside of his abdomen. Othello would not live without a transplant.

Othello received his transplant on April 9, 2003 at 9 1/2 months old. For more than a year, life for Othello and his loving family was a roller coaster…with more time spent IN the hospital than out. He "pulled an Othello" as they called it, getting through each crisis. However, during his last hospital stay for GVHD (graft versus host disease where the organs attack the recipient) he contracted several infections that he could not fight. This hospital stay lasted 5+ months, in two different hospitals, but he did improve enough to finally go home.

He got out of the hospital and went home the day before his second birthday, but all was not well. When he was 2 years and 3 days old, Othello began to bleed severely and was rushed back to the hospital. His parents made the impossible and very brave decision to call in Hospice…they had accepted what was now inevitable and wanted only for their little man to be comfortable and surrounded by their love.

Othello died at 4 am July 1, 2004 as a result of the infections he contracted at the hospital. He went peacefully and at home with mommy and daddy there with him.

He is survived by his adoring and very brave parents, Jennifer and Darin, his big brother Sebastian (who nicknamed him "Osmellio") and a host of other loving family members…not to mention a community that will miss this little boy forever.
