Memorial dedicated to the victims of the school explosion in New London, Texas. The tragedy occurred on March 18, 1937 when gas supplied the school's heating system apparently accumulated in a large crawlspace, and was accidentally detonated when a shop teacher plugged in an electric sander. The resulting explosion was heard for miles around and nearly demolished the modern concrete school building.

The memorial stands in front of the school built to replace the original, which was destroyed by a gas explosion on March 18, 1937. The school is now known as West Rusk Consolidated School.

Inscription at the base of the monument:
"Dedicated to the memory of the two hundred and ninety three children teachers and visitors who lost their lives in the London School Disaster of March the Eighteenth 1937."

Not all of the victims are mentioned on the monument. As of March 2006, the monument lists the names of (as best as I could count):

The elementary music teacher (Mattie Queen Price)
The school seceretary (Marie Patterson)

65 fifth grade students
83 sixth grade students
33 seventh grade students
29 eighth grade students (freshmen)

Hundreds of workers from nearby oil fields, fire crews, citizens, and family members searching the rubble of the nearly-demolished school in New London, Texas.

The tragedy occurred on March 18, 1937 when gas supplied the school's heating system apparently accumulated in a large crawlspace, and was accidentally detonated when a shop teacher plugged in an electric sander. The resulting explosion was heard for miles around and nearly demolished the modern concrete school building.
