Served in the U.S. Army Air Force in the 716th Bomb Squad as a pilot on a Liberator bomber. Awarded the Purple Heart, the Distinguished Flying Cross, and the Air Medal for heroic action on June 6th, 1944, when his plane was badly damaged and several crew members injured by enemy fighters in a daring raid on Romania.
