Gregory L. Gokey Sr., 84, of Reserve, died Friday, March 18, 2011 at Villa Marina Health and Rehabilitation in Superior, Wis. Gregory Louis was born on Aug. 16, 1926 in Reserve the son of Benjamin Sr. and Katherine (Martin) Gokey. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was in combat against the Japanese on the island of Luzon, Philippines. Greg also was part of the occupation force which landed in Japan at the end of the war. He was honorably discharged from the Army in 1946. Greg earned the Combat Infantry Badge, Philippine Liberation Medal, and World War II Victory Medal. In 1950 Greg was united in marriage to Elizabeth Jane Patrick. They were together for 57 years until Betty's death in 2007.

He is survived by his children, Gregory (Ann) Gokey Jr., Diane (Doug) Allen, Dawn (Dave) Rask, Dean (Jeanne) Gokey, Dennis (Cindy) Gokey, Jeff Gokey, Tina (Tom) Anderson, Lois Vnuk, Dan Gokey; daughter-in-law. Karen Gokey; 12 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; brothers, Theodore "Ted" (Juanita) Gokey, John (Norma) Gokey, Don Gokey; sister, Agnes LaRonge; many nephews and nieces.

Greg was preceded in death by his wife, Betty; son, Charles Gokey; sisters, Marcella Guibord, Pauline Isham, Marie Corbine, Loretta Hubbleston, Izzeta Ulry, Isabelle Weiss, Georgina Sossaman; brothers, Ben Gokey Jr., Emil "Bunny" Gokey and Mike Gokey. Funeral: Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 23 at St. Francis Solanus Indian Mission in Reserve. Father Gregory Hopefl will officiate with music provided by Sister Felissa Zander.


Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery with military honors accorded by LCO AMVETS Post 1998.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 22 at Pineview Funeral Service in Hayward.

Honorary Casketbearers will be Dorothea Cross, John Degalleford, John Gokey and Ted Gokey.

Casketbearers will be Gabe Gokey, Dewey Isham, Duane Isham, Jesse Rask, Tweed Shuman and Ross Vnuk.
