Royal House of Savoy. Queen Marie Jose Savoy, the last Queen consort of Italy. Her Majesty was the daughter of King Albert I of the Belgians. Princess Marie married in 1930 Umberto the Crown Prince of Italy. During World War II, the Crown Princess appealed to Adolph Hitler to allow food shipments to Belgium and to release Belgian prisoners of war. Crown Princess Marie-Jose was the first memeber of the Royal Family to contact the Allies about ending the war with Italy. Upon the abdication of King Victor Emmanuel III in 1946, the Crown Prince & Princess became King Umberto II & Queen Marie-Jose. A referendum aproximately one month later resulted in the abolition of the monarchy. The King & Queen lived the rest of their lives in exile. Queen Marie-Jose is buried at the abbey in Hautecombie, France beside King Umberto Savoy II.
