Clergy. Born the son of Thibaut le Grand and his wife Mathilde, also known as Guillaume de Champagne and Guillaume aux blanches mains. He was elected bishop of Chartres in 1165 and archbishop of Sens three year later, and became Archbishop of Reims in 1176. Alexander III named him cardinal priest in 1179. He consecrated his nephew Philippe-Auguste King of France in 1180.
