Clergy. Born the son of Alfonso I d'Este and Lucrezia Borgia. He succeeded his uncle Ippolito as archbishop of Milan when he was ten years old. From March 1536 on he lived at the French court and, with the support of the king, he was named cardinal in 1539. He participated in six conclaves and was several times the French party's candidate for the papacy. He had the Villa d'Este with its gorgeous gardens in Tivoli built.
