Franklin Alfred Janecky, 92, died Sunday, Sept. 6 at his home on Union Lake. He was born May 3, 1917 in New Prague, Minn. to Mary (Chalupsky) and Joseph Janecky. He graduated from New Prague High School in 1934. He attended the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis for two years and then transferred to Northern Illinois College of Optometry. He was a member of the Tomb and Key Honorary Society. He graduated in 1939 and came to Crookston, where he had an office for 42 years. He also had half-time offices in Erskine and Mahnomen. In 1978, he sold his Crookston practice and had a full-time office in Mahnomen.

In 1940 he married Betty Jean Bohlig in the House of Hope Presbyterian Church in St. Paul.

Dr. Janecky was very active in the Crookston community. In 1947 he was named Crookston's outstanding young man. He was a former member and president of the Jaycees, former member of the Elks Lodge, Eagle, Masons, and a lifetime member of the Kem Temple Shrine. Dr. Janecky liked to travel and seek out little known exotic places to vacation. He and Betty sailed among the windward group of islands and spent many vacations in Ambergris Caye, Belize, where he liked to scuba dive and fish. The proudest time was when he caught a 326-pound Marlin. He also was an avid hunter and golfer. He loved teaching his young grandson, Marco, to fish, hunt and be a conservationist of the land.

After retiring, the Janeckys spent winters in Sun City West, Ariz., where they maintained a home. Summers were spent at Union Lake near Erskine. In 1999 they sold the Arizona home and spent full time at Union Lake.

Dr. Janecky is survived by his wife, Betty; daughter Jill (Mario) Schisano, Crookston; son Jack (Barbra) Janecky, Mobile, Ala.; grandchildren Marco (Nina), Stanchfield, Minn.; Maria (Matt) Studen, Colorado Springs, Colo.; Justin Pries, Gilbert, Ariz.; Jamie Pries, Mesa, Ariz; Caryn Janecky, Mobil, Ala.; Susan (Justin) Taylor, Fairhope, Ala.; and John Janecky Jr., Birmingham, Ala.
