Murder Victim. While on an outing, he and his girlfriend, Carol King, were kidnapped, robbed and killed by mass murderers Charles Starkweather and Caril Fugate. He was 17 years old and Carol was 16. While on the run from the police for having killed Fugate's parents and baby sister, Starkweather and Fugate spent the night at the isolated farm outside Lincoln, Nebraska, owned by his family friend, August Meyer. On January 27, Starkweather killed Meyer, and the pair fled, sticking their car into the rutted muddy road leading to the Meyer farm. They then hitchhiked a ride with teenagers Robert Jensen and Carol King. Putting a gun to Robert's head, Starkweather demanded that he drive them all to the Meyer farm, stopping at a nearby abandoned storm cellar. There he killed Jensen by shooting him six times in the head, and after a half-hearted attempt to rape Carol, he shot her once in the head. He then stabbed her repeatedly in the abdomen and lower intestines area at Fugate's insistence. Fugate was angry with Carol because Starkweather had been sexually attracted to her, so Fugate insisted that Starkweather prove his love for only her by mutilating Carol's body. The photos at the top of this page show Carol King and Robert Jensen, from their high school yearbook. Leaving the two teenagers together in death, Starkweather and Fugate returned to Lincoln using Jensen's car. The following day, January 28, police saw Starkweather's car stuck in the mud at the Meyer farm, and quickly discovered the bodies of the three victims. For these and several other murders, Charles Starkweather was electrocuted in the Nebraska State Prison on June 25, 1959, while Caril Fugate, a minor, was given a life sentence; she was released for good behavior in June 1976 at the age of 33.
