George Tavener, Sr„ 84, died
Monday night at the home of his
daughter, Mrs. George Marsh ln
Cayuga Village. Mr. Tavener was born
in Keysham, Somersetshire, England,
and was brought to America
by his parents when he was an infant.
Mr.Tavener's parents settled in Cayuga
County and for 82 years Mr.Tavener
continued to reside in this section.
He was the son of William Tavener and
Charlotte Counsel Tavener,
Sixty years ago, he married Laura
Greenfield who survives him.
For many years. Mr. Tavener
conducted a farm in Aurelius and
for 15 years he was connected with
the highway department of the
Town of Aurelius. He acquired his
nickname "Smut" from always being
covered with coal dust from the
steam traction engine he drove while
grading township roads. He attended
the Cayuga Methodist church.
Tavener is survived by his
wife; one daughter, Mrs. George
Marsh , two sons, George and Ernest Tavener
of Cayuga; 13 grandchildren and seven
great grandchildren; by two sisters,
Mrs. Mary Dennis of Auburn and
Mrs. Sarah Taylor of Aurelius;
two brothers, Frank Tavener
of Martville and Fred Tavener of Aurelius.
