My 2nd great Uncle, but my Mama called him Grandpa; therefore I have always referred to him as our Great-Grandpa.

He loved to spin tall tales about dragons. What kid back in the 1940's had ever heard about dragons? No one knew anything about dragons, so his stories were a real treat to his listeners.

Grandpa Pittman talked about angels. He told the children never to forget to keep an eye out for the angels because they were around. They don't look like what we might think, but they are here to help. Said most angels look like regular people so always be on the lookout for them.

Read his Bible regularly and loved to share the stories with all the children. He either read to them or told the stories in his own way. Once he told them about Daniel and the lions den and how afraid the lions were of Daniel! Made God's word real to the children!

Alphabetical List of Officers of the Regular Army (From Its Organization, 1789 to 1903) Who Were Killed or Wounded in Action or Taken Prisoner, With Date and Place. P - page 137: "Pitman, J. Talbot, lt col 11 and col 9 R I inf".

Married Nora Belle West on May 29, 1901. They had six children:
Freeda Lavena (m1 Walter Herndon, m2 Thomas William Elliott, m3 Flimey Elvin Rice)
Ancil Leroy (m Ruby Volkman)
Marvin Allen (m Edra Mae Lahann)
Emit Talbot (m Hannah Margaret Simpson)
Milo Irl (m Bernadette Marie Conniff)
Donel Edward (m Mildred Hellbush)

However, upon the death of his brother and sister-in-law in 1912-1913, Uncle John & Aunt Nora reared five of their nieces and nephews:
Gorden Erastus
Huldah Belle
Wilson Casswell Jr.
Mabel Opal (my Grandma)
Raleigh Oral

They must have been greatly loved as the children's children called them Grandpa & Grandma. Aunt Dyllis said he was the sweet part of life. A farmer all his life.

Many thank to Ruth Briggs for stone photo, and Branden Hurst for the military photo.
