Professional Boxer. He was the former WBC Super- Featherweight Champion (1983 to 1984) and WBC Junior-weight Champion (1985 to 1987). Regarded by many as being one of the top fighters of his era, the flamboyant southpaw fought some of the greatest names in boxing history. Raised in New York City, he endured a troubled youth which included street fighting and on one occasion, he found himself in jail. He directed his energies to the ring and following an impressive amateur career, he marked his professional debut with a 3rd-round technical knockout of Rafael Lopez on March 31st, 1982. Camacho wasted no time making an imprint and secured his first significant title with a 5th-round technical knockout victory over Rafael Limon to captured the vacant WBC Super-Featherweight Title on August 7th, 1983. He banked the WBC Junior-weight crown, when he pulled out a 12th-round unanimous decision over Mexican fighter Jose Luis Ramirez in 1985 and after elevation to the Welterweight Division, he lost a 12th-round unanimous decision to Julio Cesar Chavez in 1992. Camacho may perhaps be best remembered for his bout against the past-his-prime legend Sugar Ray Leonard, in which he (Camacho) scored a 5th-round technical knockout on March 1st, 1997. The contest was of historic note for being the last in the career of Leonard. Additionally, he fought a pair of bouts against Roberto Duran which resulted in two victories over the Panamanian legend. Camacho remained active in the ring until 2010 and with the exception of Oscar De La Hoya (he lost a 12th-round unanimous decision) in 1997, he fought lesser-named opponents. He compiled a 79 win (38 knockout), 6 loss and 3 drawn record. At the time of his death, he was not officially retired from boxing. Camacho died following wounds he sustained during a shooting. His son Hector Camacho, Jr. became an accomplished fighter in his own right.
