Jerry was born to Florence Lorraine (Wood) and Arthur Capper Bell. Jerry was the oldest of three sons born to this union. Brothers include: Jimmy Dale and Larry Arthur. Jerry also had a step-father, Homer Robert Jones.
Jerry spent most of his childhood in Fairfax, Oklahoma; attending school and graduating from Fairfax High School in 1968. Following graduation, Jerry enrolled in Oklahoma State University to further his education. Filling the need to serve his Country he abruptly left college and joined the Army. Jerry served in active duty in Vietnam. After returning to the states he remained in military service working in the field of computers. He met and married, the love of his life, Kathleen Ann McCormick on September 15, 1973. They were married until her death in 2003. Jerry served a tour of duty in Germany followed by a tour of duty in Japan where he worked with the Military's Stars and Stripes publication. He and Kathy thoroughly enjoyed their travels with the service. After being honorably discharged from the military service, Jerry and Kathy established a home in Fairfax. He was a computer programmer for the Ardmore Data Processing Company for several years. He then established a computer business which he managed from his home. He and Kathy were active members in their church and enjoyed supporting children's activities and volunteering.
Jerry loved working with computers, growing tomatoes and, in his younger years fishing. Never having his own children, he so loved to pamper his niece and nephews. He also spent time teaching them all about computers giving each a solid footing in the field.
Jerry's mother saw that her boys were raised with a great understanding of the Word of God. The boys were frequently bringing in wounded birds, rabbits, or other creatures of nature to try to "fix". She would tell them they needed to pray for the creature's healing and trust in God. Most often the poor creatures would die and they would hold a funeral for them. The boys once found a lizard that became special to them but it ate something that made it gravely ill. They were so worried about it their mother told them she would pray for it too but it died. On our way to the airport the day Jerry was leaving for Vietnam he tried to cheer his mother up by being positive about his returning. Shortly before boarding he ask his mother to promise not to pray for him while he was in Vietnam. Stunned she asked him why and he said, "Because every time you prayed for one of our pets they died and I want to come back home."
Jerry accomplished many things in his life that, due to a troubled start as a small child, many thought would be impossible for him. He suffered greatly by the inconsiderate and hurtful acts and words of others and especially school children. Despite these things he believed in himself and achieved his goals. His contributions to life, bravery and love for his country far exceeded many of those who felt themselves to be better than others.
Jerry died unexpectedly on a Thanksgiving Day morning of a heart attack. Jerry is survived by his brother Jimmy and wife Mary Ellen Bell; brother Larry Bell; nephews Darwin, Timothy, and Kevin Bell and niece Autumn Bell; one great-niece and one great-nephew; many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
Funeral services were November 30, 2010, under the direction of the Hunsaker-Wooten Funeral Home in Fairfax, OK; presiding minister was his Uncle Don Wood; interment was in the Pappin Cemetery north of Pawhuska, OK with Military Honor Guard in attendance.
