Born May 24, 1912, in Berlin, Germany, to Reinhold and Elise (nee Witzel) Dehn, she died Monday, Jan. 11, 1999, at Provena St. Joseph Hospital, Elgin. Interment will be private.
Mrs. Stowell left Germany for America on Sept. 24, 1924, with her mother and sister, Irma, and arrived in Elgin, where her father had established residency, working at Myer's Restaurant in downtown Elgin. At the age of 16, she graduated from Ellis Business College and was an executive secretary for many businesses, including the Elgiloy Division of the Elgin National Watch Company before her retirement in 1974. On May 29, 1936, she married Walter Bancroft Stowell, whose pioneer great-grandparents settled in the Elgin area from Connecticut in 1835 and farmed on McDonald Road. Following her retirement, she lived in Brooksville, Fla., and in Willow Lake Estates for 15 years, serving as secretary of the Pinochle Club. She had resided at Countryside Manor since March 1998.
Survivors include her daughter, Janet (Gordon) Burkhart; grandchildren, Laura (Steve) Hayes of Genoa, Kristin (Dan) Carlson of Kirkland, Ill., and Brian (Marla) Burkhart and Bonnie (Mike) Hanson of Elgin; and beloved great-grandchildren, Erica, Michael and Kevin Carlson, Bradley and Tyler Hayes, Brody and Chase Burkhart, and Keagan and Austin Hanson.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Walter, Jan. 4, 1980; and sister, Irma.
There will be no visitation.
