US Congressman. He began his interest in politics as a teenager, serving as an aide to several congressman, and helped found the New Jersey Union County Young Republicans. In 1976 he graduated from law school at Southern Methodist University but his primary profession was that of a newspaper publisher. Between 1981 and 1991 he was elected six times to the State Assembly, and also served as chairman of the Republican State Committee 1987 to 1992. In 1993 he was elected as a Republican to the One Hundred Third Congress and to the next three succeeding Congresses, serving until 2001. Not a candidate for reelection, he remained involved in New Jersey politics and served as President of the Health Care Institute of New Jersey. He died of cancer.
