Contributor's note: James Cephas (Josephas) Davis was the son of Thomas Davis and Elizabeth Glenn of Lincoln and later Cleveland County, NC. In 1859, he married Rosanna Elizabeth Caroline Wesson, oldest child of William J. Wesson and Mary "Polly" Webb of Lincoln County, NC. Cephas and Rosie, who lived in the Knob Creek section of Cleveland Co. and North Brook area of Lincoln Co., went on to have 10 children, 7 of which lived to adulthood and married.
They were Roxanna Missouri (married John B. Gladden); Crowell Alexander (married Sarah Craig); John Elam (married Caroline Hull); Mary E. Genila (married Thomas Willis); George H. (married Chelsy Wall); Alice Parthenia (married Michael Brown); and Susannah Juley (married James Marcus Pressley Morrison).
Cephas served The Confederacy in Co. E of the 29th NC Infantry. He is buried at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church in the North Brook section of Lincoln Co., as are wife Rosie, his parents, several siblings, and several of his children and grandchildren.

To the Editor of The Star:
On the 24th day of August 1905, God, in his wisdom saw fit to call from this world, to be with Him in heaven, James C. Davis---residing in No. 10 township, Cleveland County. Born February the 8th 1830, has been a faithful and regular member of the Baptist Church for 50 years, and has been a deacon for 25 years of his time. He is the father of ten children---3 dead and 7 living. He leaves a widow; Mr. A.C. Davis of Catawba County; J.E. Davis of Lincoln County; Mrs. J.B. Gladden of Cliffside; Mrs. J.M. Morrison of Asheville; J.H.
Davis, Mrs. Thomas Willis and Mrs. A. P. Brown of Cleveland County. There can not be too much said of the goodness of Brother Davis. He was a warm-hearted, high toned Christian gentleman; a man who lived his religion daily; one who was ready at all times to do a kind deed for any one.
We, the children, and the widow, wish to extend to our neighbors, our many thanks for having been so kind in helping, all the time during his illness.
