Private First-Class William D "David" Lambert, born 4 Feb 1924, was the son of Jerry H and Della Jane (Holder) Lambert of Powhatan, Lawrence County, Arkansas. Powhatan is in northeastern Arkansas 116 miles northwest of Memphis, TN.
In the 1930 census 6-year-old David was living with his parents and siblings Ruby 9, J D 8, and Jerry 4, in rural Black Rock Township, Lawrence County, AR. His father is a sharecropper.
In the 1940 census 16-year-old David is living with his parents and siblings J D 18, Junior 14, Clarence 9, and Laveda 6, in Black River Township on a rented farm. JD, David, and Junior all work on the farm.
Lawrence County, AR, vital statistics show an 18-year-old David Lambert, from Powhatan, married 17-year-old Juanita Schwarz from Hollie on 18 Jul 1942.
The 80th Infantry Division was engaged at Kassel, Germany from 1-4 Apr 1945. Kassel is half way between Frankfurt and Hanover. The Fulda River runs north to south through Kassel. After the capture of Kassel the 80th moved southeast towards Eisenach and Erfurt. The NARA WWII casualty listings by state and county for Arkansas show Lambert William D, Pfc from Lawrence County as killed in action 11 Apr 1945, one week after Kassel was captured, so we can assume he was killed somewhere just southeast of the Fulda River and Kassel moving toward Eisenach and Erfurt. The 80th entered the Buchenwald concentration camp just northeast of Erfurt on 12 Apr, the day after David was killed.
