US Congresswoman. She represented the 11th District of Ohio in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1999 until her death in office in 2008. The first African American woman to represent Ohio in Congress, she was previously a legislator, judge, and lawyer. As a congressman she was the first black woman to sit on the powerful House Ways and Means Committee, and served as chairwoman of the House Ethics Committee. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, she was raised in Cleveland's Glenville neighborhood, a stable area of predominantly working-class people.She received her undergraduate degree from Case Western Reserve University, graduating with a degree in Social Work from the Flora Mather College in 1971. She received her Juris Doctorate from Case Western Reserve University School of Law in 1974. Tubbs Jones made a number of historic achievements in her distinguished career as a public servant. Prior to her election to the House, she served in several positions including as the first African-American and the first female Cuyahoga County, Ohio Prosecutor (1991 to 1999). She was the first African-American woman to sit on the Common Pleas bench in the State of Ohio (1983 to 1991) and was a Municipal Court Judge in the City of Cleveland (1982-83). In the wake of problems at the polls in Ohio's 2004 presidential election, Tubbs Jones mounted a challenge to the state's 20 electoral votes. She later introduced the "Count Every Vote Act" to fix the widespread voting irregularities that occurred nationwide during the 2004 election. Tubbs Jones received criticism for her role as a "top-tier cheerleader" for New York Senator Hillary Clinton's presidential run. She died several days after having cerebral aneurysm.
