Nancy Ella Gerald was born on 28 Jul 1883, the 5th child and 2nd daughter of Orrin F. and Rose E. (Gerald) Gerald. She was born on the family farm in Stacyville, Penobscot county. Here she would grow to young womanhood with her family.

Nancy was 19 when her father died, and to assist the family she went to work as a live-in housekeeper for the Lewis Levitt family in Smyrna Mills. She can be found with the family on the 1910 U. S. Federal Census.
Just a couple of interesting tidbits: 1) one of the little girls that Nancy would help care for, Alva Levitt, would grow up to marry a cousin of Nancy's future brother-in-law, Albert Bates. 2) on the 1910 census, living a couple of houses down the street from the Levitts is the Collier family, including their son, Lloyd. Lloyd would grow up to marry Nancy's sister-in-law, Daphine "Tab" Brown.

On 23 Apr 1913, Nancy married LeRoy George Gardner, the only son of Alice M. Gardner and her partner, Wellington Brown. Nancy and LeRoy would live their entire lives in the Smyrna Mills / Merrill area. They would go on to have 9 children, 7 of whom would survive to adulthood.

Tracking the Gardner family on the 1920, 1930 and 1940 U.S. Federal Census, you will find Nancy, LeRoy and the children living in the house that LeRoy and his family had built.

Nancy passed away at the age of 74, on 26 Apr 1958. She was buried in the Gardner section of Merrill Cemetery.
