Orrin F. Gerald was born on 27 Nov 1840 in Canaan, Somerset, Maine to Nathaniel Gerald and Sophronia Rollins. He was their 9th child and 6th son. He was named for an older brother, Orrin F. Gerald, who died in Feb 1840 at less than a year old.

A;llthough Orrin was born on the family farm in Canaan, he lived in several different counties of Maine.
On the 1860 U. S. Federal Census, Orrin can be found living with his sister and brother-in-law Susan & Ivory Ramsdell, in Rollinsford, Stafford, New Hampshire. At the start of the Civil War, from there he enlisted as a private on 18 Sep 1861, at the age of 23, in Company F, New Hampshire 4th Inf. Regiment. Mustered out on 21 Jun 1863, re-enlisted on 21 Jun 1863 and mustered out again on 17 Feb 1865.
After he was mustered out of the Army, he returned to Maine, but settled in Stacyville, Penobscot County, where he worked as a farm hand. It was here that he met his future wife, Rose Ellen Gerald, whom he married on 31 Aug 1872. Orrin and Rose were the parents of 9 children.

Orrin and Rose would continue to live on the family farm in Stacyville. Orrin passed away on 10 May 1903 and was buried in the Tracy Cemetery, located at Tracy Corner. Here he would eventually be joined by his wife, Rose and 2 of his sons, David and George.
