Death Comes To Geo. Borgerding, Bank President. Brief Illness Fatal To Dean of City's Financial Leaders; Funeral Saturday. ASSOCIATES PAY TRIBUTES. George Borgerding, 81, president of the Mutual Trust & Deposit Company, and dean of Floyd county bankers, died at 7:40 o'clock Thursday morning in his home, 1414 East Spring street, following a heart attack Tuesday night. Mr. Borgerding, one of the oldest active bankers in Indiana, was at his desk Tuesday. Returning home in the afternoon, Mr. Borgerding had dinner and then retired early. About midnight he suffered the attack. Mr. Borgerding was born in New Albany on April 27, 1856. He received his education here attending the New Albany Public Schools and New Albany Business College. Following the completion of his course at the business college, Mr. Borgerding joined the Charles Hegewald Corporation as a bookkeeper. He later served in the same capacity for the August Barth Leather Company. Mr. Borgerding left the Barth concern in 1893 to become cashier of the old New Albany National Bank. In 1920 he resigned his position at the bank to become president of the Mutual Trust & Deposit Company, succeeding Claude L. Balthis, who is now engaged in business in Louisville.
Mr. Borgerding was a member of St. Mark's Evangelical Church and also of the Scottish Rite, New Albany Commandery, Knights Templar, New Albany Council Royal Arch Masons, DePauw Lodge of Masons, of which he was a past master, and Hope Lodge, Independent Order of Odd Fellows. A member of the board of regents of Fairview Cemetery, he served as treasurer of the group for many years. The only other public office he held was as member of the board of school trustees, years ago. Mr. Borgerding was among the few remaining business leaders of the old school, in New Albany. High tributes were paid to him by commercial and professional associates as a man of exceptional character whose motto always was "honesty in every endeavor." He was highly respected by all that knew him because of his integrity, ability as a business man and his kindly disposition.
Surviving are a son, William Borgerding, New Albany, and a daughter, Mrs. A. B. Williamson, South Bend. The body is at the residence where funeral services will be held at 2:30 o'clock Saturday afternoon with the Rev. F. A. Meusch, St. Mark's pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Fairview.
The active pallbearers will be Locke Bracken, Frank P. Clipp, Guy Scott, Edward Magness, Harry Harter, and Addison Rue, all connected with Mutual Trust & Deposit Company. The honorary pallbearers will include George A. Newhouse, Otto Voyles, Clifford Bensinger, William W. Schwaninger, Judge John M. Paris, Jack Fine, Joseph Schwartzel, H.
