Maj Griffin (Lt Griffin at the time) was the navigator of Doolittle Raider crew #9, B-25 Mitchell 40-2303 Whirling Dervish that went down near Nanchang, China. In July 1943, Griffin's B-26C Marauder 41-34872 took off for a bombing mission (target Gerbini Airdrome, Sicily) and was shot down. He was taken prisoner of war by the Germans for nearly two years. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters and the Chinese Army, Navy, Air Corps Medal, Class A, 1st Grade. He married Esther Jones on June 13, 1945, in Dowagiac, Michigan. She passed away in 2005.
