Enlisted as Aviation Cadet at Vancouver Barracks, Washington on March 15, 1941. Commissioned as Second Lieutenant with rating of bombardier on December 16, 1941 at Pendleton Field, Oregon. He was a member of the 7-man crew of the B-25 bomber named the Ruptured Duck. He was injured on Tokyo Raid.
The crew of the "Ruptured Duck," was made up of a the B-25 bomber: pilot Lt. Ted W. Lawson, (Find a Grave #17824560) , copilot Lt. Dean Davenport (#41506226), navigator Lt. Charles L. McClure (#41894350), bombardier Lt. Robert S. Clever (#41659340), and flight engineer/gunner Sgt. David J. Thatcher (#165665258).

Following his return to the U.S. to complete his recovering in the US Army Air Corps, he was stationed at Baer Field, Fort Wayne, Indiana when he was killed in an airplane crash near Versailles, Ohio on November 20, 1942. Decorations include Distinguished Flying Cross, Chinese Army, Navy, Air Corps Medal, Class A, 1st Grade.
