George E. Arneson, 87, local resident and former resident of Spokane, Wash., passed away Wednesday May 24, 2006, at the Care & Comfort Home of Havre. His graveside service was noon, Friday, May 26, at the Holy Cross Cemetery in Spokane. Memorial contributions in George's honor may be made to a hospice organization of one's choice. Services were entrusted to Holland & Bonine Funeral Home.

George was born Feb 2, 1919, in Grand Rapids, Minn., to Edward and Gurine (Olson) Arneson. He joined the Army in 1942 and served in World War II. He received a double purple heart and the bronze star. He was a P.O.W. in the war and was honorably discharged in 1946. He married Evelyn Medo on Sept. 22, 1943. George was recalled for the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged again in 1953. He worked for the Great Northern Railway and the Burlington Northern Railway for 43 years in the maintenance-of-way department. George was very active in many activities and enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting and square dancing and was a member of the Lions Club. George was a devoted family man.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and one son, Ron Arneson.

George is survived by his wife of 62 years, Evelyn Arneson of Havre; daughters, Diane (Don) Gladden of Fullerton, Calif.; and Georgene Arneson of Havre; and son, Don (Yvonne) Arneson of Kalispell.
