Retired M/Sgt., U.S. Army-1962. Veteran of World War II, Pathfinder Unit, 101st. Airborne Division, 502nd (Deuces), Jump Master, and Certified Glider Pilot, Bronze Star, Purple Heart recipient, and many other commendations. He was stationed at The Citadel, Charleston, SC, where he was a small arms instructor, and chauffeur for General Mark Clark; he was a PT instructor at Ft. Jackson, Columbia, SC; and also stationed at Camp Smiley, Karlsruhe, Germany. After his retirement from the U.S. Army, he and his family had a 165 acre farm in Monroe County, WV, where they raised Registered Polled Hereford beef cattle. He also was a certified House Parent for The Davis Stuart Home for Children in Lewisburg, Greenbrier, WV. He later moved to Mercer County, WV where he resided until his death. He was the father of three children, and married to his wife, Mary Catherine for 53 years. He was one of 14 children born to Julia Caroline Ratliff of Grundy, VA., and Earnest Shields Bowyer of Wolf Creek, Monroe County, WV.
