Elsie was born June 20, 1920, in Moxee, WA to John and Matilda (Jongejan) Huibregtse, fourth child of six. She was raised and schooled in Moxee with summer sojourns to Whidbey Island with Uncle Mead and Aunt Jennie Sweeney to give her mother some relief from raising her younger twin brothers. She graduated from the Moxee School District and attended Yakima Business College while working as a clerk in a dime store. After graduation, Mom worked 8 years as Head Cashier for the Westside J.C.Penny Co.
January 1946 Mom married Dad, Bernard Hyink, after his discharge from the Coast Guard. They lived in Seattle for a year until they experienced their first earthquake and gladly returned to make Yakima their permanent home. Mom went back to work for JC Penny until the birth of her son Jon and 2 3/4 years later her daughter Ann. Mom went back to work after we started school to help make ends meet at the Westside National Bank, now Wells Fargo. She learned the various banking jobs cross training and eventually became the Operations Manager retiring in July of 1979.
Mom was a lifelong member of the East Valley Reformed Church, singing in the choir, teaching Sunday school, and helping out where she could. The church had been a big part of her life growing up and she tried dutifully to pass this on to her children. She was also a life member of Soroptimist International, where she enjoyed meeting and making new friends, participating in fund raisers, especially casino night events.
March 1980 Dad passed away and Mom refocused and kept herself busy helping friends and family and finally with the births of her grandsons, Matthew Hyink, Ryan Rostvold, Andrew Hyink and Erik Rostvold, she attained bragging rights with her brothers and sister. Chasing from one sporting event to another, school programs, awards ceremonies became her love, always giving support and encouragement where she could. Baking apple pies, making divinity candy, knitting wash cloths and afghans, and eating ice cream will always be remembered.
As the little sister, Mom received tremendous support from her brothers and sister and especially the sisters-in-law. Through the loss of our Dad and through her many operations and recoveries from broken bones and hip replacements, she received care and moral support that was unmeasureable in her eyes, and couldn't be thanked enough.
Elsie is survived by her sister Gladys Labberton, sisters-in-law, Florence Huibregtse, Velma Huibregtse and Maybelle Hyink; son Jon and wife Patti Hyink, daughter Ann and husband Gene Rostvold, grandsons Matthew and Andrew Hyink and Ryan and Erik Rostvold and many nephews and nieces and their families. She is preceded in death by her parents, John and Matilda Huibregtse, husband Bernard Hyink, brothers Dale, Melvin, Earl and Merle Huibregtse and sister in law Naomi Huibregtse.
In keeping with Mom's wishes in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the East Valley Reformed Church or charity of donor's choice in care of Keith and Keith Funeral Home.
Visiting hours will be held at the Keith & Keith Ninth Avenue Chapel on Sunday, April 3 from 12 until 5 p.m. and Monday, April 4 from 4 until 8 p.m. A graveside service will be held at Terrace Heights Memorial Park Tuesday, April 5, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. Those wishing to attend should meet at the cemetery.
