Death came suddenly Saturday afternoon about 3 o'clock to Fred Byers, pioneer rancher and resident of the Fruita district, as a result of a heart attach suffered while at his home two and a half miles north of Fruita. Death was entirely unexpected. Mr. Byers was but 55 years of age and had apparently been in excellent health. He was about his home and his ranch work as usual Saturday morning but passed away suddenly when stricken later in the day.
Fred Byers was born in Filey, Nebraska, the son of Mr. and Mrs. George Byers. His parents moved to Kansas when he was a mere child, and came on to this valley when he was but 15 years of age, arriving about the turn of the century. They located in the lower valley and there Mr. Byers grew to manhood. He engaged in ranching throughout his lifetime.
Mr. Byers is survived by his widow and five children, William Byers, who is ranching in the lower valley; Max, employed by the Morey Mercantile Company in this city; Leland, now a resident of California; Miss Joyce, a student in the Fruita high school and Gordon, a baby a year and a half of age. There are also surviving four sisters, Mrs. J. S. Woody of Glenwood Springs; Mrs. Joe Corthell, Carbondale; Mrs. D. H. Spence, Compton, Calif., and Mrs. Ernest Hatch, Hollydale, Calif.; two brothers-in-law, Charles White of Rifle and Fay White of Idaho.
Two brothers, Julius and George Byers, preceded Mr. Byers in death.
Mr. Byers' father, George Byers, passed away some 15 years ago and his mother about five years ago. Mrs. Byers is the daughter of Mrs. Smith Kilby, pioneer lower valley resident.
Fred Byers was a man widely and favorably known over the valley and his sudden passing will be the occasion of deep sorrow to his many friends.
Funeral services for Fred Byers will be held at 2:30 Wednesday, at the Fruita Methodist Church. The Rev. Murray Beattie will officiate, and burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery. The Fruita I.O.O.F. lodge will hold graveside services. Starks Funeral Home in Fruita is in charge of arrangements.
