Leland was born October 16, 1919 in Fruita, Colorado, the third child of Fred and Minta Byers.
He attended Mesa College in Grand Junction and went to work for Pacific Gas & Electric Company in California in 1940.
He married LaVerne Sommerville in 1941, joined the Navy (Seabees) in 1943, and was in the Phillipines when the war ended in 1945. Their two oldest children, Charles and Merry Lynn were born in California. The couple moved back to Colorado in 1949, where four more children were born, Mark, Sherry, Fred, and David.
Leland worked 33 years for the Public Service Company of Colorado, the first 16 years in Grand Junction, 12 years in Rangely, and the last 5 in Silverthorne. He retired in 1984 as Operations Manager of the Silverthorne Division of the gas transmission department.
Leland and LaVerne moved to Vernal in February of 1984 where they enjoyed their retirement years.
