James William Pavey, 90, 89 Woodland Estates Road, died in his home of natural causes Monday afternoon.

A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Hagler-Anderson Mortuary in Helena. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery.

He was born in Thermopolis, Wyoming, and moved with his parents and family by team and wagon to Montana when he was 8. The family homesteaded west of Maudlow where he grew up and graduated from high school.

He worked on various ranches in that area breaking horses and was well known for his riding ability. At 14, after trailing some lost horses to Townsend, he hopped a train to Helena and worked at the smelter in East Helena briefly, riding to and from work on the trolly from downtown Helena for five cents each way.

In his early 20s, he drove to California and worked on a ranch near Chico and in the redwoods near Fort Bragg before coming back to Montana.

In July of 1927 he married Julia Lavery in Rexburg, Idaho. He owned a service station and repair shop in the Bozeman area before moving to Helena in 1941. He then acquired the dealership for Continental Oil which he ran for 23 years, retiring in 1964.

In 1975, Julia Pavey died. He married Esther Cameron in July 1977 and she died in 1987.

Survivors include his daughter Angela Walker of Great Falls; step-daughters Jane Bird of Helena and Katherine Husar of Chinook; step-son James Ashley of Los Angeles; sisters, Myrtle Verwolf of Corvallis and Bertha Hinshaw of Mobridge, S.D.; and one grandson.
