A PARTIAL BIOGRAPHY OF THE BOWLES FAMILY Written by Joseph M. BOWLES of the County of Sonoma and State of California - November 11, 1895

My grandfather Jesse Bowles married Hannah Perkins and to them were born ten children as follows: David, Elizabeth, Stephens, Sally, Jesse, (my father), Hughes, Anderson, Robert, Joseph, and Mourning. All of my father's brothers and sisters died in Bourbon Co., Kentucky, excepting Joseph and Hughes. Uncle Joseph was killed and scalped by the Indians Massacre at the battle of River Raisin after the surrender of the Kentucky troops by General Winchester to Colonel Proctor of the British forces in 1813. Uncle Hughes and family moved to Illinois from Bourbon Co., Kentucky, in 1830 and settled in De Witt Co. on Salt River. My father Jesse Bowles was born near Richmond, Virginia, in 1782. My mother's maiden name was Chloe Parker and was born near Baltimore, Maryland in 1781. She had two brothers, Captain Jack and Archibald Parker, who served in the War of 1812. The Parkers also settled in Bourbon Co., Kentucky, at an early date.

Jesse married Hannah Perkins on March 3, 1773 in Goochland Co., Virginia by Rev. Wm. Douglas. She was d/o Stephen Perkins and Mary Hughes b. abt. 1756 in St. James Parish, Goochland Co., Virginia and d. aft. 1820 and is probably buried alongside her husband. Jesse's marriage and birth of two oldest sons, David Jesse Bowles and Stephen Bowles, are recorded in "The Douglas Register" kept by Rev. Douglas, pastor of St. James Northam Parish in Goochland Co., Virginia (Dover Church) (According to the research of Mrs. Wilfred L. Bowles of Bowen, Illinois - now deseased.)
