Sister Alberta Blase, OP of Dominican Convent, Sparkill, New York, died on April 3, 2016 in Siena Hall, Dominican Convent, Sparkill, NY.
Born in Maplewood, MO on April 19, 1915, Catherine was the daughter of Fredrich and Catherine Carr Blase. Catherine entered the Dominican Congregation of Our Lady of the Rosary in Sparkill on February 2, 1937, and received the name Sister Mary Alberta, professing her first vows in 1938 and her final vows in 1943.
Sister Alberta took classes in the area of child care, food services and teacher training at St. John University, Manhattan College, and Fordham University in New York. She also studied at Fontbonne College in St. Louis, Missouri.
During her professional life, Sister Alberta ministered in the Archdiocese of New York. She served as Infirmarian at St. Agnes Home, Sparkill, NY (1938-42); served in child care at St. Ignatius Nursery, New York, NY (1942-1952); and as Dietician at Cardinal McCloskey Home, White Plains, NY (1952-1967). For over 35 years Sister Alberta was a competent staff worker and offered community service at the Motherhouse. She was well respected by the housekeepers, maintenance workers and her own Dominican Sisters for the competent work and attention to detail that she displayed in whatever aspect of work she completed. In 1986 Sister Alberta traveled to Rome to the Dominican House of Studies where she served as staff cook for one year. Upon her retirement she continued to be a prayerful and delightful presence to all those she would meet each day.
Sister Alberta is predeceased by her twin, Sister Loretta Blase, OP, and is survived by her cousins Alberta Brennecke, Valley Park, MO, Peter and Barbara Zablocki of Paramus, NJ; Mary and Byron Bumbaco of Hopatcong, NJ and her many friends.
Before her physical decline, Sister Alberta could often be seen in the dining room and hallways sharing stories with anyone who would listen. She was a delightful person who always had a smile for anyone she would meet. She was faithful to the God she loved and to the life she chose as a Dominican Sister. We are grateful for her seventy-nine years in the congregation and we thank God for her life and her goodness. May the Lord shine His light upon her and give her eternal rest in the kingdom of heaven.
