In the 1901 census, the McNally family were living at Renmore Barracks, Galway, the Depot of the Connaught Rangers.

James McNally, aged 42, a Lieutenant and Quartermaster of the 4th Battalion of The Connaught Rangers, married, born in Co. Monaghan.
Mary, his wife, aged 38, married, born in Co. Cork.

Mary Frances, daughter, aged 15, a Scholar, born in Co. Cork.
Clare Eleanor, daughter, aged 13, a Scholar, born in Co. Cork.
Violet Kathleen, daughter, a Scholar, aged 6, born in Cyprus.
Mona, daughter, aged 4, a Scholar, born in Co. Mayo.
Bernard, son, aged 3, born in Co. Galway.

a domestic servant was also present.

His daughter Clare died in the sinking of R.M.S. Leinster on 10 October 1918.
