Anglo-Danish engineer, CBE, MICE, MIStructE. He is best known for his work as the design engineer on the Sidney Opera House, where he worked together with the famous Danish architect Jorn Utzon, (1918–2008). He was born to Danish parents in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, where he founded the engineering and consultancy firm of Arup & Arup in 1938. He worked with "Tecton", a group of architecs founded by the architect Berthold Lubetkin (1901–90), who built the Gorilla House, London Zoo, the elegant Penguin Pool with its spiral concrete ramps designed 1934). Other Zoo buildings at Whipsnade, Bedfordshire (1933–6), and Dudley, Staffordshire (1936–7), followed. The influential apartment-block, Highpoint I (1933–5), Highgate, London, which was an important experiment in high-rise residential design, and was one of Arup's most significant collaborations with Lubetkin.
