Bernard Leroy Pestle, 42, member of the Rock Island Fire Department from 1 Jun 1956 - 6 Dec 1964, became ill yesterday while fighting a fire at 539 12th St., Rock Island.

After returning to the station, he was taken by squad car to St. Anthony's Hospital, where be died in the emergency room about a half-hour later.

Police Patrolmen Andrew C. Jefferson and David J. Bryant were on duty at the fire, and they went to Station No. 6 on a request by Assistant Fire Chief Harry O. Wahlstrom to take, Pestle to the hospital.

A physician tried to revive him at the hospital's emergency room to no avail. Death at 4:40 p.m. was caused by a heart attack.

He resided at 517 19th Ave. Rock Island.

Mr. Pestle was born Feb. 17, 1922, in Rock Island, a son of Forrest and Margaret Pestle. He attended St. Joseph's School and was graduated from Rock Island High School.

He served with the 82nd Airborne Division during World War War II, seeing action in the Mediterranean area.

He married Antoinette Klauss May 22, 1950 in Rock Island.

Mr. Pestle joined the Fire Department June 1, 1956. He had been at No. 3 Station during his entire term of service until several weeks ago.

Before becoming a fire fighter, he had been a machine operator at J. I. Case Co. He was a member of St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church and Fire Fighters Local, No. 530.

Surviving are the widow; his parents, Rock Island; a son, Michael, at home; a stepdaughter, Mrs. John Sigsworth; four grandchildren and a brother, Kenneth, Rock Island.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at 8:30 in the Wheelan Funeral Home and 9 at St. Joseph's Church. Burial will be in National Cemetery, Rock Island Arsenal.
Friends may call after 7 tonight at the funeral home, where the Rosary will be recited at 7:30 tomorrow night.
