Lewis Allen was born on November 20, 1808 in New York, the son of Cornelius and Huldah Allen. On April 24, 1835, he married Sarah Cook. Lewis and Sarah had at least seven children together; Huldah, Sarah, John, William, Charles, Johnson, and James Allen. All but Huldah, William and James would die during childhood.

His wife Sarah died on July 26, 1849, and Lewis married Jane Elizabeth Adams less than a year later on July 3, 1850 in Charlton, New York. Lewis and Jane lived in Schenectady, New York, and they had at least four children together; Martha, Frank, Frances and Emily.

Throughout his life, Lewis found work mostly as either a grocer or a carpenter. By 1880, he and his wife, along with his daughter Emily, were living in Cleveland, Ohio. Lewis Allen died on September 5, 1885.
