Frank Richard Penale, 81, of Kies Court, died Tuesday (Nov. 21, 2000) in Mount St. Mary's Hospital, Lewiston, after a brief illness.

He was born Sept. 27, 1919, in Niagara Falls, the son of Ralph and Francesca (Gallo) Penale.

Mr. Penale was a graduate of Niagara Falls High School. At the age of 16, he won the Golden Gloves Boxing Title, winning 33 of 38 amateur fights.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army for 39 months as a general clerk with the 1010th Army Air Forces Base Unit. He participated in campaigns in Egypt-Libya, Naples-Foggia, Rome-Arno, and Tunisia. He was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal, the European-African Middle Eastern Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.

Mr. Penale worked at Nabisco for 46 years, starting in the Niagara Falls Bakery and retiring in 1984 as distribution manager in the Milk Bone plant in Buffalo.

He joined the Niagara Falls Umpire Association in 1948 and served as an officer for 50 years. He was inducted into the Niagara Falls Umpires Association Hall of Fame in 1991 and the Niagara Falls Sports Hall of Fame in 1998. He also was the recipient of the New York State Umpires Association Tony DeVivo Memorial Award in 1991.

In 1994, the Frank Penale Outstanding Umpire Award was created that is given annually to a deserving umpire.

Mr. Penale is survived by his wife of 55 years, Jennie (Trybala) Penale; a son, Rick Penale of Lewiston; a daughter, Linda Brophy of Tampa, Fla; two brothers, Laurence "Ace" Penale and Dominic Penale of Niagara Falls; three sisters, Josephine Laurenzi and Regetta "Ki Ki" Bane, both of Niagara Falls, and Frances Havens of Grand Island; two grandsons, Ryan Ballentine and Adam Penale, and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Anthony Penale, Theresa DiCecco, Jenne Whitmire, Erick Penale and Mary Penale.
