1665 HCU's Short Stirling (#LJ622) aircraft, with an aircrew of six, took off from RAF Marston Moor on a night training flight. After the seven-hour flight, LH622 was on its return path back to base at RAF Marston Moor when it stalled, a tire bursting on the landing, resulting in its crashing into the main street of the small nearby village of Tockwith: the entire crew lost their lives and Tockwith's postmaster, 68-year-old Arthur William Carlill, also perished in the accident. Nineteen houses on the street were also destroyed.
