Augusta graduated from Meridian High School in 1912. She was an outstanding student and her parents encouraged her to continue her schooling. She decided to attend Mississippi Woman's College in Hattiesburg where she continued to excel. She moved to Washington D. C. right after her father died and trained at George Washington University, Washington D. C. and Army School of Nursing, Washington D.C. As an Army Nurse she attained the rank of Colonel.
She retired from U S Army Nurses Corps in 1954 after 28 years of service as a Colonel.
