OBITUARY :
FUNERAL PLANS FOR WAR HERO REVEALED HERE

A funeral service will be held tomorrow at Smithsburg for Master Sergeant Richard Rudolph Beard, who died in the Korean War nearly five years ago. His body arrived last night under military escort.

The funeral will be held by Rev. Orrin T. Carroll at 2 p.m. tomorrow at the Minnich Funeral Home. Interment will be in Smithsburg Lutheran Cemetery.

M/Sgt. Beard was killed in action near Singhang-ni, North Korea, on November 29, 1950. He was a member of Company C, 70th Tank Battalion, and was 33 years old.

Born and reared near Smithsburg, he was the son of the late Frank C. and Ida B. (Frey) Beard. He attended Smithsburg High School, enlisting after his graduation in 1936.

M/Sgt. Beard served in the North African and Sicilian campaigns of World War Two, then in the occupation forces of Germany and Japan before assignment to Korea. He held the Silver Star for the Tunisian campaign, the distinguished service cross, the silver star and the bronze star for his service in Korea.

Surviving are two brothers, Vaughn K. Beard, Hagerstown, Route Four, and Gail B. Beard, Smithsburg, Route Two.

Company B of the Maryland National Guard and Morris Frock Post of the American Legion will provide military ritual at the funeral tomorrow.
