He was killed by enemy action in Anbar province, Iraq. Five months before deploying for his second tour in Iraq, he attended his father's funeral at Arlington National, just several feet from where he, himself, would be buried. Among his military awards and decorations were the Silver Star; Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal; and Purple Heart.

He was predeceased by his father, Dale Alan Burger Sr; and his paternal grandparents, John Joseph Burger and Ruth Alice Scheutzow Burger. He was survived by his mother; seven sisters; his maternal grandparents; three nieces; a nephew; an aunt; three uncles; two cousins; and one brother-in-law.

Services were held on Monday, November 29, 2004, at Lee A Patterson & Son Funeral Home, Perryville, MD. Interment on November 29, 2004.
