=================
John Berg entered the arms of our heavenly Father on Feb. 10, 2009.

Born July 3, 1933, his youth was spent in Portland, Ore., San Francisco and Clearlake [Highlands], where his parents moved after World War II to open Berg's Fountain restaurant. "Johnny" was a dedicated volunteer fireman in Lower Lake [fire house on Lakeshore Dr., Clearlake Highlands] for many years.

An Air Force veteran during the Korean War, John returned home after the war to work at the local grocery store [Economy Food Mart] in Clearlake. It was there where he met the love of his life, Sandy Hambleton. They were married Sept. 9, 1962, and moved to Oakland briefly and then purchased their first home in Concord in 1963 to raise their family.

John continued working in the grocery industry and took a management job at Mayfair and then co-op markets throughout the East Bay. In his semi-retirement, John worked in kitchen appliance sales. He lived in Clayton.

An avid baseball fan, John coached countless little league teams and was a fixture at first base for many softball teams.

Johnny is survived by his wife, Sandy; sisters, Lotus and Pat; children, Scott (Cathy), Kirsten (Steve) and Tricia (Chris); and seven grandchildren, Ashley, Torunn, Brittany, Kimmy, Drew, Jack and Sydney.

A memorial service and reception was held on Sunday, Feb. 22, 2009 at NorthCreek Church, 2303 Ygnacio Valley Road, Walnut Creek, CA 94598.

Donations in John's memory can be made to Hospice of the East Bay, 925-887-5678.
