Mary Ann (Carda, Hanneman) Schwabrow was 1 of 9 children of Joseph & Mary Ann (Aubrecht) Carda. She came to Detroit from Strakonice, Bohemia in 1887. The family settled and stayed near Michigan ave and Grand Blvd.

As a young girl Mary loved to paint with oils. Before becoming a teenager her talent was nutured by art lessons and sessions at the Detroit Museum of Arts. Mary was a gifted artist, her paintings toured Europe with other talented American artists. But, her lessons and exposure was limited. There was no money after her father Joseph's untimely death in 1897.

When her father died things looked bleak. Her mother Mary was 40 and pregnant. Mary the oldest was 13, Carl 11, Barbara 7, Joseph 6, George 4, Libby 2 & Olga not yet born. Her mother did her best, all the children that could work did and the family stayed together.

When she was 21 Mary married John Charles Hanneman on 17 Feb 1906 in Windsor, Canada. The couple had 1 child, Raymond John Hanneman. Mary ended the marriage with John and on 6 Sep 1926 she married Walter Schwabrow.

When Mary's mother died in 1940, Mary renewed her painting activities. She painted many large religious paintings which are now in churches in this country and on other continents.

Mary loved to tell stories to her grandchildren & later to her great grandchildren.

A few years after Walter retired they sold their 3 houses on Christy in Detroit. During the winters Mary and Walter lived in Boynton Beach, Florida and in the summers on Elk Lake in Attica, Michigan.
