William was the oldest child of Caleb & Mary (Smithson) Forbes. William had three siblings:
James, Mary Courtney and Tamar (Burgess).

By 1780 William had married Thamer Gregory one of fourteen children of James & Ruth Gregory.

During the Revolutionary war from 24 Apr 1781 to 24 Apr 1782 William served in the NC Line. He was a Corporal in Bailey's company.

William and Thamer had seven children before Thamer died.

2. Noey, d. aft May 1802
3. Courtney, d. aft May 1802
4. Tammer, d. aft May 1802
5. William, b. abt 1780, d. 1850-65 IL, married Noah, 2 ch
6. Caleb, 1783-1864 IL, m. Mary Curling, 5 ch
7. Infant male, b bef 1790, died young

By 1795 Thamer had died and William married Thamer's sister Mary Gregory. There were no children from this marriage.

Seven years later William died. He wrote his will on 21 May 1802 naming his heirs (wife Mary and 6 children. On 31 Aug 1802 probate had begun.

William was undoubtedly buried in one of the several Forbes family cemeteries in Currituck County. The grave markers that were locally used at that time were wooden and they did not last long. So his burial site is unknown.
